SQL Server Discovery Wizard

Story by Server Management, 31-05-2009, 0 comment

Do you know what SQL Server instances are running on your network? This free utility will help you track them down.

It sometimes feels as though SQL Server instances are like weeds. They seem to pop up where you least expect them, in areas you just cleared out and were sure were clean. The problem is there are just too many applications that install their own instance of SQL Server without so much as a by-your-leave - accountancy software, management packages, anything that needs to store data seems to think it's OK to add an instance to your network.

What this means is that it's difficult to know how many SQL Servers are deployed, how many are running mission-critical versus non-critical applications, where are they located, and whether any are candidates for consolidation.

Quest Discovery Wizard is a free graphical utility that lets you to detect SQL Server instances and monitor the current network for changes. It has a number of discovery methods which help you to reveal even those SQL Server instances which cannot be detected using the native tools.

You can

  • Find how many databases there are and how much data is there
  • Determine databases that are good candidates for consolidation
  • See history of these databases including when created and installed
  • Learn what versions of SQL Server are deployed and what their service packs are
  • Understand server names, instance names and operating systems
  • See who the end users are

The software gives you a choice of four different methods to discover the instances - network registry connection, WMI connection, SQL Server login, or general TCP connect. When an instance is detected, the information gathered from it is stored and available for you to view. You can see the servers' instance names, domain affiliations, IP addresses, and running port, along with the version, build, and operating system for the instance.

Once you have a list of instances, you can set the utility to run automatically on a schedule, then view the changed, new and lost instances from the previous scan.

The utility is currently in beta and can be downloaded from the Quest website.
