IE patch now available

Microsoft's advice is to use the patch as soon as possible.
An emergency update for Internet Explorer was released this week. The emergency patch is very unusual - only around 10 have been issued since the schedule of patch Tuesdays began in 2003. The update is designed to overcome the IE vulnerability that was used in the attack on Google and around 33 other large organisations.
Writing on the Microsoft security blog, Jerry Bryant said that the patch: "Addresses the vulnerability related to recent attacks against Google and small subset of corporations, as well as several other vulnerabilities. Once applied, customers are protected against the known attacks that have been widely publicised."
Microsoft says it has seen only limited attacks based on the vulnerability, and that so far, the only successful attacks have targetted IE 6. However, security researchers have published ways to bypass the improved security in more recent releases of IE, so it is probably only a matter of time before a larger scale problem surfaces for IE7 and 8.
