Microsoft tests tool for migrating from MySQL for non-Oracle fans
A preview version of a tool for users who want to get away from MySQL is available for download from Microsoft. MySQL users have been less than enthusiastic about the prospect of the software being taken over by Oracle if the Sun/Oracle deal goes ahead, though whether the users would be any happier moving to Microsoft remains to be seen.
The Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for MySQL is designed to make it easier and cheaper to migrate to SQL Server.
The tool comes in versions for migrating to SQL Server 2005 and for migrating to SQL Server 2008 and SQL Azure. Azure is Microsoft's cloud-based database that is built on SQL Server technologies. It is available for download from the Microsoft website.
