Spam accounts for 95% of emails

EU agency says the situation isn't getting any better.
Anti-spam measures at the ISP and desktop remove over 95% of all emails to leave the non-spam remainder, according to a survey from the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).
ENISA is an EU agency for security in the IT market, and in its third annual spam report it concludes that while the fight against spam has 'reached maturity', spam remains an unnecessary, time consuming and costly burden for Europe.
The Executive Director of ENISA, Dr Udo Helmbrecht commented that: “Given the number of spam messages observed, I can only conclude more dedicated efforts must be undertaken. Email providers should be better at monitoring spam and identifying the source. Policy-makers and regulatory authorities should clarify the conflicts between spam-filtering, privacy, and obligation to deliver.”
The amounts spent by ISPs in fighting spam run into millions every year. The full report can be downloaded from the ENISA website.
