Storage Server 2008 released

Story by Mike James, 06-05-2009, 0 comment

Windows Storage Server has been Released to Manufacturing.

The new release is built on Windows Server 2008, and according to Microsoft you can have it out of the box and serving data within 30 minutes, complete with settings optimised for file services with extra file and storage capabilities.

Among the extras, Storage Server includes Single Instant Storage (SIS) to avoid duplicating the same data, and iSCSI Software Target to support the management of block storage and file service in the same appliance.

As I explained here, iSCSI is an implementation of the SCSI protocol over a standard TCP/IP connection that can be used to build SANs using standard hardware .  These SANs can then be accessed using high-performance networks such as Fibre Channel or gigabyte networks.

A while ago Microsoft bought a company called String Bean and changed the name of its WinTarget software to Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, which was made available as an option pack for Windows Storage Server 2003. This technology is now fully integrated with Storage Server 2008.

As with the 2003 version, Storage Server 2008 will be available as an out-of-the-box finished server from a number of hardware manufacturers. You can read the list of companies that will be releasing Storage Server 2008 models here. At the time of writing, the list consisted of Dell, HP, NEC and Transtec.

We'll take a more detailed look at Storage Server 2008 when the hardware dust has had time to settle.
